Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Boosts Exports to China

Fajarasia.co – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) continues to boost the export value of fishery products to China to support the acceleration of national economic growth.

This is done by strengthening bilateral cooperation and improving the quality and safety of fishery products to be highly competitive in the global market.

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said Indonesia and China had signed a new memorandum of understanding on maritime cooperation. The two countries agreed to enrich, expand and enhance mutually beneficial maritime cooperation mechanisms.

“Indonesia and China have also signed a memorandum of understanding on security guarantees in the import and export of aquatic products. I am sure that the realization of this platform bilaterally will encourage smooth export of fishery products with economic cooperation that promotes the sustainability of fish resources,” said Minister Trenggono Thursday ( 23/6/2022).

China is a major trading partner of Indonesia’s marine and fisheries sector in the Asian region. Exports of Indonesian fishery products to the Bamboo Curtain country in the last five years have shown a positive trend, increasing from USD 477 million in 2017 to USD 890 million in 2021.

Meanwhile, on a global scale, the volume and value of exports of Indonesian fishery products to international markets increased by 2.5% and 5.80% per year, respectively. This growth was largely contributed by five main commodities, namely shrimp (34.83%), tuna (15.14%), squid (11.27), crabs (7.97%) and seaweed (6.58%).

Trenggono ensured that the target for increasing exports would prioritize domestic needs. In addition, the management of capture fisheries and aquaculture systems prioritizes ecosystem sustainability according to the blue economy principles.

“To ensure sustainable fisheries, and support the export of fishery products, the MPA implements a fishing quota-based fishing policy. Special areas and quotas will be allocated to local and traditional fishing communities. This will place the community as one of the main beneficiaries of the fisheries and marine economy. ,” he concluded. *****
