Puan: Personal Data Protection Bill to be passed tomorrow

Fajarasia.co – The Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has confirmed that the Personal Data Protection Bill (RUU PDP) will be officially ratified at the DPR RI’s Plenary Meeting tomorrow. He hopes that the new regulation will protect every citizen from all forms of misuse of personal data.

“The results of the meeting of the Deliberative Body (Bamus) and the leadership meeting (Rapim) of the DPR have decided to bring the PDP Bill to the plenary session tomorrow to be ratified as law,” said Puan, Monday (19/9/2022).

Level II discussions or Decision Making on the PDP Bill will be held at the 5th Plenary Session of the DPR for the Session Year 2022-2023, Tuesday (20/9).

“The ratification of the PDP Bill will be a milestone for Indonesia in protecting the personal data of its citizens from all forms of crime in today’s digital era,” said the first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

The final draft of the PDP Bill, which has been discussed since 2016, consists of 371 Inventory Lists (DIM) and produces 16 chapters and 76 articles. The number of articles in the PDP Bill has increased by 4 articles from the government’s initial proposal at the end of 2019, which was 72 articles.

“This PDP Bill will provide legal certainty so that every citizen, without exception, is sovereign over his personal data. That way, there will be no more people crying because of online loans that they didn’t ask for, or doxing that makes residents uneasy,” said Puan.

Puan hopes that the Government will quickly enact the PDP Bill after it is passed tomorrow. Thus the derivative rules, including the establishment of a supervisory agency that will protect the public’s personal data, are quickly realized.

“Through the PDP Law, the state will guarantee the people’s right to the security of their personal data,” said Puan.

Furthermore, the grandson of the Proclaimer of the Republic of Indonesia, Bung Karno, said the PDP Bill would serve as a guide for relevant ministries/agencies and stakeholders in maintaining a healthy digital security climate in Indonesia. Puan also appreciated the Government’s cooperation in drafting the PDP Bill with the DPR.

“On behalf of the DPR leadership, I also thank the experts and all elements of the nation who contributed to providing input so that the PDP Bill can become a good legal product,” he said.

“It is the State’s obligation to provide protection to its people in any aspect, including the protection of personal data,” continued Puan.

In addition to the ratification of the PDP Bill, tomorrow’s Plenary Meeting also has an agenda for submitting a report from the House of Representatives Commission VIII on the results of the fit and proper test for Candidates for the Supervisory Board Member of the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) from the Community Elements for the 2022-2027 period, which was then continued with decision making.

Then there was also the opinion of the factions on the Draft Law on the Commission XI of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia concerning the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (PPSK) which was followed by a decision to become the Proposed Bill of the DPR RI.

The Plenary Meeting will also take the approval of the DPR on the Application for Consideration of the Granting of Citizenship of the Republic of Indonesia. Furthermore, the report of Commission VII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia on the Approval of the Sale of State Property (BMN) for the FSO Ardjuna Sakti Ship.

The final agenda for tomorrow’s Plenary Meeting is the approval of the extension of the discussion time of 3 bills, namely the Bill on the Civil Procedure Code, the Bill on the Second Amendment to Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, and the Bill on the Continental Shelf.****
