Puan Maharani Reminds the Spirit of the 1955 KAA at the UN Disaster Risk Reduction Forum

Fajarasia.co – Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, DR. (H.C.) Puan Maharani touched on the spirit of the 1955 Asian-African Conference when she emphasized the importance of building awareness and shared commitment in mitigating and dealing with disaster risk reduction.

This he conveyed in a speech at the Global Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction or the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2022 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, Badung Regency, Bali, Thursday (26/05/2022).

GPDRR is a biennial multi-stakeholder forum established by the United Nations (UN) Agency to review progress, share knowledge and discuss the latest developments and trends in disaster risk reduction.

“Commitments between nations and countries have often been carried out in various forums, collaborations, and meetings. Even the commitment to advancing common interests and cooperation has been carried out since the 1955 Asian-African Conference,” said Puan in front of the delegates from the participating countries of the forum.

The Asian-African Conference gave birth to the Bandung Principles of 1955, which has the goal of every nation being free and prosperous. Puan’s grandfather, President Soekarno, played a big role in making Indonesia the host as well as the key country at the 1955 Asian-African Conference.

However, the ideals of KAA have not been fully realized. Puan highlighted the problem of the gap in the achievements of the country’s progress that still exists, which has an impact on different attitudes in treating nature as a source of state revenue.

“Since the declaration of the Bandung Principles of 1955, which aspires to every nation to be free and prosperous, until now there are still cases of shortages of food, clean water, environmental damage and environmental pollution,” said Puan.

Puan encourages a change in mindset so that human activities do not have an impact on the destruction of nature.

“We need a change of way of thinking, that we don’t just take from nature, but we have to restore nature back to a good ecosystem,” added Puan.

As a concrete manifestation of parliament’s work to solve global problems, such as environmental recovery, at the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union in Bali on 20-24 March 2022, Puan led the approval of the Nusa Dua Declaration which contains efforts to adapt and mitigate climate change.

This is also a real step for Puan to continue the spirit of mutual cooperation in realizing the ideals of KAA to advance common interests. Yesterday’s IPU event was attended by delegates from 155 countries. Puan explained that in the Nusa Dua Declaration, world parliaments affirmed their commitment to strengthening national actions to realize global commitments, namely achieving net zero emissions.

“As well as support for climate finance for developing countries of US$ 100 billion must be fulfilled immediately,” said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

In addition, at the regional level, the ASEAN Inter Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) also encourages cooperation to realize the ASEAN Vision 2025 on Disaster Management.

Puan encourages realistic and real forms of cooperation between nations and countries to be able to touch the core issues, namely managing global economic competition and industry that can contribute to environmental recovery. He encouraged industry not only to take from nature, but also to be able to restore its recovery which was carried out systematically and massively.

“The formulation of a shared commitment is important. However, concrete actions, no matter how small, become more important for us to get closer to achieving sustainable development,” said Puan.****
