Fajarasia.co – The support of the charismatic cleric Tuan Guru Turmudzi Badarudin, the caretaker of the Qomarul Huda Bagu Islamic Boarding School, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) for Puan Maharani to run in the 2024 presidential election, dismissed the negative stigma that contrasted nationalists with Islam.
Political Communication Observer from Indonesia Political Opinion (IPO) Catur Nugroho assessed that the support from Tuan Guru Turmudzi Badarudin was proof that Puan had succeeded in embracing support from religious (Islamic) groups.
He said, so far there are groups that separate and even contradict the nationalist group with the Islamic group. “In fact, if we look at the history of the founding of this republic, it cannot be separated from the struggle with nationalist and Islamic figures,” he said, Saturday, August 26, 2022.
“I see Puan Maharani trying to get rid of the negative stigma that has been raised so far, that nationalist figures are not close to Islamic figures,” he continued.
To further strengthen Puan’s closeness with the ulama, Catur suggested that various collaborative activities be followed, especially in community empowerment programs and Islamic boarding schools.
“This is of course good for Puan as Chair of the DPR as well as PDIP administrator, especially if it is followed by collaborative activities between parties and religious leaders for community empowerment, pesantren, especially women,” he said.
In addition, PDIP is also encouraged to further activate the Baitul Muslimin Indonesia institution, so that collaboration becomes more institutionalized.

“I came to meet with Tuan Guru Turmuzi besides continuing the tradition of good relations with the scholars taught by my grandfather Bung Karno, I also continued to connect with Mrs. Megawati Soekarnoputri,” said Puan about her visit to the Qomarul Huda Islamic boarding school, Saturday (27/8/2022).
“This Qomarul Huda Bagu Islamic Boarding School has a great history of Islamic moderation and Indonesian democracy. This is where the Nahdlatul Ulama National Conference of Alim Ulama was held in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on 17-20 November 1997. One of the recommendations of the National Conference was about the position of women in Islam,” he continued.
During the meeting, Tuan Guru Turmudzi Badarudin, who wore a turban, cap, and an all-white shirt, re-explained the role of the Islamic boarding school he led in organizing the very monumental National Conference.
“Munas alim ulama is like ending a long debate about women’s leadership in Islam. The National Conference affirms equality between men and women in Islam, also recognizes certain advantages in women when they become leaders,” explained Tuan Guru Turmudzi.
In the meeting attended by Deputy Chairperson of the MPR Ahmad Basarah, Tuan Guru Turmudzi gave important points about the relationship between religion and the state, especially the role and position of women’s leadership from an Islamic point of view.
Women’s leadership in Islam has indeed become a hot topic in Indonesia. There are pros and cons in it.
In fact, the Qur’an has clearly stated how big the role of women as leaders is, for example it is mentioned in QS al-Naml/27: 23. Tuan Guru Turmudzi quotes the word of Allah SWT.
“Indeed I found there was a woman who ruled over them. She was endowed with everything and had a great throne,” he said.
At the end of the meeting, Tuan Guru Turmuzi supported and prayed for Puan to gain the people’s trust in the 2024 presidential election and to be blessed by Allah SWT to become the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
