Fajarasia.id – The rain had just subsided in Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Saturday evening (Nov 15, 2025) when crowds began filling Graha Bhakti Budaya at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM). Hundreds of spectators queued with anticipation, knowing that Mahagenta’s performance would be more than a concert—it would be a celebration of nearly three decades of musical storytelling.
A Magical Atmosphere
As the lights dimmed, the hall transformed into a captivating space. Traditional instruments blended seamlessly with modern sounds, creating a harmony that drew the audience into an emotional journey. Performers appeared in traditional attire from across Indonesia, alongside international touches such as Japanese kimono, reflecting Mahagenta’s multicultural spirit.
Rekindling the Flame of Tradition
Founder Uyung Mahagenta described the concert, titled Lentera Khatulistiwa, as an effort to reignite the light of tradition. “We want this work to illuminate the soul and bring people closer to their culture,” he said.
Representatives from the Ministry of Culture, including Meta Ambar Pana, praised Mahagenta’s dedication to preserving traditional music through innovative arrangements. “This concert marks both the culmination of Mahagenta’s long journey and a commitment to an even brighter future,” she noted.
Felencia Hutabarat, Vice Chair of the Jakarta Arts Council, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Mahagenta proves that tradition and innovation are two forces that complement each other.”
29 Years of Musical Journey
The evening featured 17 of Mahagenta’s finest works, ranging from gentle compositions to explosive performances, leaving the audience in awe. Behind the scenes, six months of preparation involving 40 members—including musicians, dancers, and even junior high school students—paid off in a vibrant showcase.
The concert also served as a retrospective of Mahagenta’s history since its founding on November 11, 1996, during the Ethno Music Festival organized by the Jakarta Arts Council. Nearly three decades later, Mahagenta continues to nurture tradition while embracing modernity, inviting listeners to feel proud of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
A Night to Remember
Thunderous applause closed the evening, proof that Mahagenta’s fusion of generations and cultures resonated deeply. On that night at TIM, the light of Lentera Khatulistiwa shone brightly, reminding all that tradition remains alive and inspiring in the modern era.
Mahagenta’s Lentera Khatulistiwa was not just a concert, but a living testament to Indonesia’s cultural resilience and creative spirit.*****
