Fajarasia.co – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) together with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of the Maldives are exploring cooperation in eradicating corruption, both in the prevention and enforcement sectors.
This was conveyed by both parties during a virtual courtesy call at the KPK Building, Jakarta, Wednesday (22/6/2022).
Deputy Chairperson of the Corruption Eradication Commission, Lili Pintauli Siregar, in her speech said that the exploration of cooperation was very important, including those related to increasing institutional capacity and human resources (HR), exchanging information on good practices, exchanging experts, and other fields.
“For the sake of law enforcement, we can also work together in terms of exchanging data and information, searching for people, finding and returning assets, extradition, joint investigations, and others,” said Lili as quoted from her written statement.
According to Lili, corruption is a cross-jurisdictional crime that encourages the importance of international cooperation between anti-corruption agencies in the world.
Moreover, he said, the perpetrators of corruption are smart people and have power so that corruption is called an “extra-ordinary crime” which requires handling in extraordinary ways.
“With the cooperation between the KPK and the Maldives ACC, it is hoped that it can increase and strengthen international commitments in eradicating corruption,” said Lili.
Meanwhile, ACC Maldives President Abdul Shamil appreciated the meeting with the KPK. ACC Maldives, he said, will set up a committee at the technical level so that discussions and information exchange can be achieved effectively.
“Together, we will agree on an MoU and describe the cooperation technically with the main point being fighting corruption. The description is specifically about technical expertise and is also related to how we can learn from each other such as experiences in handling cases in the past, success or performance achievements each institution,” said Abdul Shamil.
The Deputy for Information and Data at the KPK Mochamad Hadiyana was also present at the meeting, the Director of Inter-Commission and Agency Network Development (PJKAKI) Kartika Handaruningrum, and a number of other structural officials. Also present from the ACC Maldives were the Vice President of the ACC Maldives Abdul Salaam, members of the ACC Maldives commissioners and their staff.
The KPK explained that the exploration of cooperation was in line with the spirit of the Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) at the G20 Presidency in which the KPK as chairman proposed four priority issues, namely increasing the role of audit in eradicating corruption, public participation and anti-corruption education, prevention and regulatory frameworks. legal profession to mitigate the risk of money laundering with predicate crimes of corruption, and eradication of corruption in renewable energy.
In addition, the KPK said that the implementation of the G20 was a momentum to accelerate the eradication of corruption globally because corruption was still a scourge among G20 member countries.
