Bruno Fernandes on Ronaldo’s Red Card: “It’s Part of Football”

Fajarasia.id – Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has downplayed the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card in the World Cup 2026 European Qualifier against Ireland, saying such incidents are simply part of the game.

“It happens in football. Ronaldo suffered the consequences of his reaction, something he didn’t intend,” Bruno said, as quoted from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Sunday (Nov 16, 2025).

The match at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, on Friday (Nov 14) early morning WIB, saw Ronaldo sent off in the 61st minute after being judged to have elbowed Ireland defender Dara O’Shea.

Initially, the referee issued a yellow card, but after consulting VAR, the decision was upgraded to a straight red card.

The dismissal means Ronaldo will miss two matches, including Portugal’s crucial final Group F clash against Armenia. Bruno admitted losing the captain is a significant blow.

“Ronaldo won’t be able to help us against Armenia. Losing him means we play without someone who can score at any moment,” Bruno explained.

Despite the setback, Bruno expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and quality, stressing that Portugal’s main objective is to secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal currently leads Group F with 10 points from five matches, two points ahead of Hungary in second place. Armenia sits at the bottom of the table.

A win against Armenia would guarantee Portugal’s place at the World Cup as group winners. However, a draw or defeat combined with a Hungary victory over Ireland could push Portugal into second place, forcing them into the playoff route.****
