Fajarasia.id – A woman identified by the initials MND became the center of public attention after being paraded by residents of Gili Trawangan, Desa Gili Indah, Kecamatan Pemenang, on Monday (November 17, 2025). The action was carried out as a customary sanction following allegations that she had stolen an electric bicycle.
Footage circulating on social media shows MND walking around the island’s tourist area with a sign hanging from her chest, declaring her involvement in theft. The procession covered approximately 300 meters and drew the attention of both locals and visiting tourists.
Hasanuddin, spokesperson for the Gili Trawangan Customary Council, confirmed the incident. He explained that MND has long been known among residents and business owners for repeated acts of theft and fraud. “She has often committed theft and scams, and is already notorious among the community here,” Hasanuddin said.
He added that only weeks earlier, MND had been detained by Pemenang Police after allegedly stealing a rented e-bike. However, the victim later withdrew the report, leading to her release. Following her release, MND was again accused of stealing a motorcycle in Lombok before returning to Gili Trawangan, despite having previously been banned from the island for five years under customary law.
Her return sparked concern among residents, who reported her to the Customary Council. The community then agreed to impose a traditional sanction by parading her publicly, ensuring her actions were exposed. “During the procession, many people confronted her, demanding the return of money and phones she had taken,” Hasanuddin noted.
He emphasized that the people of Gili Trawangan prioritize customary law over state legal processes, believing it to be more effective in deterring repeat offenses. “If someone is jailed, they may reoffend after release. But when paraded, everyone knows, and the shame itself becomes a deterrent,” he concluded.
