Fajarasia.co – Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, was sworn in as the country’s 15th vice president on Sunday (19/6/2022). In her inauguration, Sara Duterte-Carpio called for national unity following a divisive election campaign.
“The days ahead may be full of challenges that call for us to be more united as a nation,” he said in his inaugural address in his hometown of Davao, where he took the oath of office with his parents standing beside him.
Sara Duterte-Carpio, 44, is the running mate of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who also won the May 9 election and will be sworn in as the country’s president on June 30, when their six-year term begins.
Marcos, son of the dictator ousted from power in the 1986 uprising, Ferdinand Marcos, also took part in the swearing-in ceremony which was attended by relatives, allies and supporters of Sara Duterte-Carpio.
They both scored landslide victories, by extraordinary margins not seen in decades, forging important alliances and carrying on a message of unity that also helped many allies win seats in legislative and local government positions.
Like her father, Sara Duterte-Carpio trained as a lawyer before entering politics in 2007 when she was elected as her father’s deputy mayor in Davao, 1,000 km from the capital Manila.
She originally wanted to become a doctor but instead pursued a political career and in 2010 succeeded her father as the first female mayor of Davao.
