Puan Urges Women to Be More Involved in Disaster Management Programs

Fajarasia.co – When speaking at The 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2022, the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized the need for cooperation from all policy makers, including parliament, in disaster risk reduction. He also encouraged women to be more involved in this issue.

Puan said that women and children are the group that is the most victims of every disaster.

“Therefore, I hope that how to mitigate and overcome it, I hope that women will also be given roles and opportunities to participate in mitigation in disaster management,” said Puan during an interview after speaking at the GPDRR forum held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Bali, Thursday ( 26/5/2022).

The role of women in disaster management, including as policy makers, is said to be important. Because as a group with many victims, said Puan, women understand better what each other needs.

“So that in implementing disaster management, women can understand, understand, participate in tackling victims of women and children,” said the first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

When speaking in front of delegates from government and NGO representatives at the GPDRR forum, Puan emphasized that the DPR RI is ready to move together with the parliaments of other countries to strengthen its role in disaster risk reduction.

Domestically, the DPR has played a significant role in disaster management, including through its oversight and budgeting functions.

“Disaster management, mitigation, and anticipation programs are all discussed in the relevant commissions in the DPR. Of course, our commitment is with the Government so that disaster management programs can be carried out as effectively and efficiently as possible,” explained Puan.

“Keep maintaining effectiveness and how to protect disaster-prone areas can be mitigated. And if a disaster occurs, disaster management can be carried out quickly and effectively,” he added.

On the sidelines of the 7th GPDRR event, Puan also had a chance to hold a bilateral meeting with the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Abdullah Shahid. During the meeting, the UN General Assembly appreciated Indonesia which was considered to have succeeded in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Including the success of vaccinating 78% of Indonesia’s population, he even appreciated that after Eid al-Fitr there was no spike in Covid-19 cases, instead it decreased, and God willing, it will continue to slope,” said Puan.

To Puan, the President of the UN General Assembly also congratulated Indonesia for successfully organizing an international event of this magnitude. Abdullah Shahid was also said to provide support for Indonesia as the G20 and P20 presidencies.

“He supports the implementation of the G20 and P20 and hopefully Indonesia can keep the Covid-19 condition improving in the future,” said Puan.

The former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture also assessed that the 7th GPDRR was a trial for the G20 and P20 major events in October. Puan also believes that Indonesia can hold the implementation of the forum for the meeting of the big countries well, especially since the DPR has also succeeded in holding the 144th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), which is the parliamentary forum of world countries, last March.

“I hope Indonesia is ready to live with Covid. This is of course a guarantee, God willing, that Indonesia is ready to carry out the upcoming G20 and P20 presidencies,” he concluded.*****
