Puan: The Covid-19 Pandemic is an Alarm for the Importance of Cooperation in Facing Global Problems

Fajarasia.co – Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, invites the whole world to continue to cooperate in disaster matters.

He said that the Covid-19 pandemic, which is still happening in various parts of the world, is a reminder of the importance of mutual cooperation between countries.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has become a wake up call for the importance of joint efforts and work in dealing with global problems,” said Puan Maharani when giving a key speech at the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Bali, Thursday (26 /5/2022).

GPDRR is a special global meeting for disaster. The United Nations (UN) organizes the agenda every two years and this time Indonesia is the host.

Puan said that this international meeting which focuses on discussing disaster mitigation is a joint effort to build commitment as citizens of the nation on this earth.

Commitments between nations and countries have often been carried out in various forums, collaborations, and meetings. In fact, the commitment to advancing common interests and cooperation has been carried out since the 1955 Asian-African Conference.

“Joint efforts are needed in solving global problems such as food vulnerability, energy, clean water, sanitation, and nature conservation,” said the PDI-P politician in front of delegates from various countries.

Global economic competition and industrial development, continued Puan, have created gaps between countries in exploiting nature, utilizing technology, and developing development processes related to the environment, such as infrastructure, housing, irrigation, agriculture, forestry, and so on.

On the other hand, there is also a gap in the achievement of progress between countries, so they have different attitudes in exploiting nature as a source of state revenue.

However, Puan hopes that in the future every country can have a commitment to build people-centered disaster resilience.

It can be started by building awareness and commitment to preserve and support nature and the environment.

“In the next stage, a common will is required in building a world order of industrial ecosystems and an economy that is friendly to the environment,” said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

Puan then reminded about the declaration of the Bandung Ten Principles of 1955 which aspires to every nation to be free and prosperous. However, he is concerned that until now there are still cases of food shortages, clean water, environmental damage, and environmental pollution.

Therefore, it is necessary to change the way of thinking.

“A way of thinking that we don’t just take from nature, but we have to restore nature back to a good ecosystem,” said Puan.

He also emphasized that parliaments in Indonesia and other parts of the world
increasingly aware of its strategic role in strengthening international cooperation for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

This environmental issue has become one of the common concerns among others in the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU).

As President of the 144th IPU Assembly in Bali, 20-24 March 2022, Puan has led the approval of the Nusa Dua Declaration related to climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.

In the Nusa Dua Declaration, the world’s parliaments affirm their commitment to strengthening national action to realize global commitments, namely achieving net zero emissions.

“As well as support for climate finance for developing countries of US$ 100 billion which must be fulfilled immediately,” said the grandson of the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno.

At the regional level, the ASEAN Inter Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) also encourages cooperation to realize the ASEAN Vision 2025 on Disaster Management.

Puan once again emphasized the need for realistic and tangible forms of cooperation between nations and countries to be able to touch the core issues in disaster mitigation, namely managing global economic competition and industry that can contribute to environmental recovery.

“Industry does not only take from nature but also must be able to restore its recovery; a recovery program that is carried out systematically and massively,” said Puan.****
