Puan Proposes 6 Months of Maternity Leave, Commission IX: Good and Rational Proposal, We Are Ready to Fight

Fajarasia.co – Member of Commission IX DPR RI PDIP faction Muchamad Nabil Haroen supports the proposal for six months of maternity leave in the Draft Law (RUU) on Maternal and Child Welfare (KIA).

The chairman of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, had previously submitted the proposal for six months of maternity leave, who said that mothers must have sufficient time to provide breast milk for their children, including working mothers.

Gus Nabil, Nabil Haroen’s nickname, emphasized that he was ready to fight for Puan Maharani’s proposal.

“So I think the proposal for six months of leave is quite rational and let’s fight for it together,” said Gus Nabil to reporters, Friday (17/6/2022).

Gus Nabil agreed that the first 1000 days of life are very important to maintain because it will have an impact on children’s lives.

If not taken care of properly, children can experience growth failure or stunting.

“In fact, a pregnant woman will give birth to an extraordinary generation of people. Her child could be a president or a minister. Then since the first 1000 days it is not managed properly, it will turn into a disaster, a burden on the nation,” he said.

Previously, the DPR RI agreed on a draft law (RUU) on Maternal and Child Welfare (KIA) to be further discussed into law.

The chairman of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, said that this bill was designed to create superior Indonesian human resources (HR).

The agreement on the MCH Bill to be further discussed into law and discussed with the Government was taken at the Legislation Board Meeting (Baleg) of the DPR on Thursday (9/6/2022). This decision will be brought to the next plenary session of the DPR.

“We hope that the Bill on Maternal and Child Welfare which is included in the list of the 2022 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) will be completed soon. This bill is important to welcome Indonesia’s golden generation,” said Puan in her statement, Monday (13/6/2022).

The MCH Bill focuses on the golden age of a child, which is a crucial period of child growth and development which is often associated with the first 1,000 days of life (HPK) as a determinant of a child’s future.

Puan explained that there are a number of basic rights that must be obtained by a mother, including the right to obtain health services, health insurance during pregnancy, to receive special treatment and facilities in public facilities, facilities and infrastructure.

In addition, Puan said, mothers must have sufficient time to provide breast milk for their children, including working mothers.

He emphasized that working mothers must have sufficient time to express breast milk during working hours.

“The MCH Bill also regulates maternity leave of at least six months, and cannot be dismissed from work. In addition, mothers who are on maternity leave must continue to receive salaries from corporate social security and corporate social responsibility funds,” explained Puan.

The determination of the period of maternity leave was previously regulated in Law No. 13 of 2003 concerning Manpower with a duration of only 3 months.

Through the MCH Bill, maternity leave is changed to 6 months and a 1.5 month rest period for working mothers who experience miscarriages.*****
