Fajarasia.co – Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, DR. (H.C.) Puan Maharani attends the 2022 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, Badung Regency, Bali, Thursday (26/05/2022).
In her speech at the event themed From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a Covid-19 Transformed World, Puan said the Covid-19 pandemic was an alarm for the importance of joint efforts and work in dealing with global problems.
In front of the forum participants, the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture emphasized the importance of building people-centered disaster resilience.
“Human-centered disaster resilience starts with building awareness and commitment to preserving the sustainability and carrying capacity of nature and the environment,” said Puan.
Puan added that efforts to build awareness must be followed by a common will to build a world order of industrial ecosystems and an economy that is friendly to the environment.
During the meeting, Puan also explained the role of the DPR in disaster management efforts. There are political strengthening works carried out by parliament to take part in mitigating and seeking disaster management.
“Parliament is in a unique position in disaster management, namely as a catalyst for policy making, bridging the interests of various parties, and representing constituents,” said Puan.
The first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives explained four things that the parliament did as a step to strengthen politics for handling the disaster.
“First, strengthening development policies that pay attention to the carrying capacity of the environment. Second, support disaster management policies that can involve the participation of all parties, from the government, the general public, and industry,” explained Puan.
In addition, the DPR also provides a legal basis for managing environmentally sound development and disaster management. And the fourth is to provide sufficient budget in reducing risk and increasing community resilience to disasters.
Puan also conveyed the commitment of the DPR to work together with the parliaments of other countries to strengthen its role in disaster risk reduction.
“Now is the time to act immediately, without delay,” said Puan.
“I believe and believe that this conference will be able to produce the right formulation, which can be implemented in strengthening resilience in the face of disasters and sustainable development,” concluded Puan. ****
