Minister of Agriculture invites world countries to press "food loss and waste"

Fajarasia.co – Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Syahrul Yasin Limpo invites world countries to apply the concept of reducing Food Loss and Waste (FLW) to reduce food that is wasted in vain against existing food availability.

“The large potential for decreasing FLW which can be used as a source of food availability is the reason why this aspect is the target of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially in responsible consumption and production,” said Minister Syahrul in the “Workshop on Gap Analysis on Food Loss”. and Waste Indices” in an online series of G20 Presidencies in Jakarta, Tuesday (21/6/2022).

According to the Minister of Agriculture, good handling of FLW will be able to increase the availability and security of a country’s nutrition. In addition, it is also able to increase efficiency along the food value chain while contributing to environmentally friendly development.

“FAO reports that a third of the food produced in the world is wasted and becomes non-recyclable waste. At the same time, the world’s food needs must be met for nine billion people by 2050. Therefore, we need to implement FLW,” said the Minister of Agriculture. .

Meanwhile, the results of a Bappenas study estimate that the number of FLW in Indonesia during the period 2000-2019 ranges from 115 to 184 kg per capita per year. For this reason, efforts to significantly reduce FLW are expected to increase food security, especially in terms of availability, which is an important part of future agricultural development.

“Currently, there is still a gap between the measurement method and the availability of data to estimate the food loss index and food waste index in various countries, including G20 member countries. This results in difficulties in measuring the ability of each country to support global food availability,” said the Minister of Agriculture.

The Minister of Agriculture hopes that through the workshop there will be an increase in understanding in implementing the FLW measurement method. For this reason, the commitment of each G20 member country is very much needed in building better food security.

“Once again I say that the agricultural sector plays an important role in meeting food needs. Therefore, the food and nutrition problems currently facing many countries must be solved together,” said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.****
