Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives Ask the Government to Supervise Illegal Mining

Fajarasia.co – Chairman of Commission VII DPR RI Sugeng Suparwoto asked the government to actively monitor illegal mining activities, because they have a negative impact on the environment and threaten the safety of life.

“Government justice is needed to oversee mining activities that can threaten safety and have a negative impact on the environment,” said the Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (23/5/2022). ).

He said this in response to the collapse of gold mines in several locations in Indonesia which killed workers. Most recently, on April 28, 2022, an unlicensed gold mining pit in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra, collapsed, killing 12 female miners.

“This is nothing new, especially for illegal gold mining locations carried out in former gold mining sites that are no longer in use,” he regretted.

The Nasdem Party legislator also asked the mining companies to be responsible for improving the living standards of the people in the surrounding environment.

“To minimize incidents like this,” he said.

It is known, in 2021, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded that there were 3.7 million illegally mining. They are spread over 2,741 locations.****
