Judicial Commission Urges Stronger Focus on Judges’ Welfare and Social Dimensions

Fajarasia.id – The Judicial Commission (KY) has called on the government and relevant stakeholders to pay greater attention to judges’ welfare, particularly in terms of social and family aspects. KY emphasized that judges should ideally be assigned to locations closer to their families to help ease the heavy demands of their profession.

KY spokesperson Mukti Fajar Nur Dewata stressed the importance of family proximity in reducing stress. “Given the heavy workload, it is important that judges are placed near their families,” Mukti said in a press statement on Sunday (Nov 16, 2025).

Mukti also highlighted the psychological challenges faced by judges, noting that distance from family and high caseloads often lead to mental strain. If left unaddressed, he warned, such pressures could affect their physical health. “If psychological stress is not consulted with mental health experts, it can harm judges’ overall well-being,” he explained.

KY has conducted a welfare survey involving 567 judges from first-instance to appellate courts across Indonesia. The survey covered financial and economic conditions, professional aspects, psychological health, family-social factors, and integrity.

Based on the findings, KY submitted policy recommendations to the Supreme Court (MA). Among the proposals is reforming the placement and transfer system, shifting from a national model to a regional-based approach. This would take into account judges’ family responsibilities and the vulnerability of their assigned regions.

The Commission’s appeal comes after the passing of Judge RZA from Palembang District Court, who died of a heart attack at his boarding house on Thursday (Nov 13, 2025). KY expressed condolences and reiterated the urgency of improving judges’ welfare to prevent similar tragedies.

The Judicial Commission’s push underscores the need for systemic reforms to ensure judges can perform their duties effectively while maintaining their social, psychological, and family well-being.****
