Food Law Revision Pushes Innovation to Improve Quality and Quantity

Fajarasia.id – Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR), Firman Soebagyo, emphasized the importance of viewing food from a broader perspective, beyond rice as the staple commodity.

Speaking on the revision of Indonesia’s Food Law, Firman highlighted the need for food innovation, substitution, and the promotion of local cuisine as part of the nation’s cultural identity.

“Food is not only about rice. Diversification is essential, and substitution is important to reduce dependency on certain commodities,” Firman said on Friday (Nov 21, 2025).

Diversification and Innovation

Firman explained that the revised Food Law aims to encourage innovation that can enhance both the quality and quantity of food production. He noted that innovation and substitution strategies are expected to improve public health while strengthening food security.

“Innovation and substitution can elevate food quality and contribute to better health outcomes for society,” added the senior Golkar politician, who also serves on the DPR’s Legislative Body.

Preserving Local Food Culture

Beyond innovation, Firman stressed the importance of preserving and promoting local foods. He argued that local cuisine is not only about taste but also about safeguarding cultural heritage and national identity.

“By cultivating local food traditions, we can preserve our culture and identity while ensuring food diversity,” he said.

Broader Vision for Food Security

Firman concluded that the revision of the Food Law reflects a broader vision for Indonesia’s food security—one that integrates innovation, substitution, and cultural preservation. He expressed hope that these measures will reduce dependency on single commodities and strengthen resilience against global food challenges.***
