BMKG Warns of Extreme Weather: Thunderstorms, Coastal Flooding, and 4-Meter Waves Expected Thursday

Fajarasia.id – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potentially extreme weather conditions on Thursday (November 20). Communities across several regions are advised to prepare for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, coastal flooding, and sea waves reaching up to four meters.

BMKG forecaster Ranti Kurniati, speaking in an online briefing, noted that light rain is expected in major cities including Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Bengkulu, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Mataram, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Gorontalo, Makassar, Kendari, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayawijaya, Jayapura, and Merauke.

Moderate rainfall is forecast for Ternate, while heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in Padang, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, Mamuju, and Manado. Meanwhile, Denpasar and Kupang are expected to experience thick clouds and foggy conditions.

In addition to rainfall, BMKG predicts maximum daytime temperatures of up to 33 degrees Celsius in Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Pontianak, Samarinda, Tanjung Selor, Palangka Raya, and Banjarmasin.

Coastal communities are urged to remain alert to tidal flooding (known locally as banjir rob), which may affect areas along Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, Banten, northern Jakarta, West Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and North Sulawesi.

BMKG explained that current weather patterns are influenced by atmospheric dynamics, including cyclonic circulation detected over the Indian Ocean south of West Java, the Natuna Sea, the Pacific Ocean north of Papua, as well as waters near Lampung, East Kalimantan, and Central Papua.

The agency also reported the development of Tropical Cyclone seed “FINA” in the Arafura Sea south of Tanimbar Island. The system has intensified, with wind speeds reaching 60 knots (category two), creating areas of wind convergence at speeds of up to 25 knots across the Arafura Sea, Banda Sea, Maluku, and Aru Islands.

BMKG strongly advises fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution, as high waves of up to four meters pose significant risks to maritime activities. The public is encouraged to monitor official BMKG updates to anticipate and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather.
