Bangladesh's biggest bridge to open to traffic on 25 June

Fajarasia.co – The Padma Bridge, the largest bridge in Bangladesh, will be opened to traffic on June 25, Bangladesh Minister of Roads and Bridges Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday (24/5).

The minister made the announcement after meeting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka on Tuesday.

“Our prime minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the bridge on the morning of June 25 in a grand ceremony,” he said.

The Bangladeshi government has also set a toll rate for the bridge.

According to the government’s official notification, the toll rate will range from 100 taka to more than 6,000 taka (1 taka = IDR 166.5).

The infrastructure megaproject with a 6.15 km main bridge was carried out by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (MBEC). This is the largest and most challenging infrastructure project in Bangladesh’s history

Connecting northeast and southwest Bangladesh, this bridge spanning the Padma River is also an important part of the much-anticipated trans-Asia rail network.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the main construction work of the bridge in 2015.

The Padma multipurpose bridge is located about 40 km southwest of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.****
