Arsul Sani: Mounting the LGBT Flag, British Embassy Violates Diplomatic Ethics

Fajarasia.co – The British Embassy in Jakarta is in the public spotlight after raising the LGBT+ flag. PPP regrets this.

“PPP considers the British Embassy to have violated diplomatic ethics and norms, especially the obligation to respect the laws and culture of the host-country or the host country where the Embassy is located,” said PPP Deputy Commissioner Arsul Sani when contacted, Sunday (22/5/2022) .

Although the LGBT+ flag was flown in the courtyard of the embassy, which under international law belongs to the UK’s jurisdiction, Arsul said, diplomatic ethics and norms should be adhered to and observed by any country’s representative office.

“Indeed, the LGBT flag was later taken down and no longer installed, but this incident also shows Britain’s insensitivity to the potential political burden in the form of widespread protests from various elements of Indonesian society which will ultimately create unnecessary political burdens for the Indonesian government,” said Arsul. .

“PPP asks that the incident of raising the LGBT flag does not happen again so that Indonesia as the host country does not need to be burdened by the consequences it can cause, namely widespread protests,” he continued.

Previously, the British Embassy to Indonesia based in Jakarta had flown the LGBT rainbow flag. But now the LGBT flag has been removed and replaced with the Ukrainian flag.

Meanwhile, regarding the LGBT flag, the official Instagram account of the British Embassy for Indonesia provided information. The colorful flags are hoisted to commemorate anti-homophobia day, 17 May.

“Yesterday, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) – we raised the LGBT+ flag and held an event, for all of us who are part of the one human family,” the British Embassy in Indonesia said on its official Instagram account.

The attitude of the British government is clear to support LGBT. They urge the international community to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The UK supports diversity and tolerance.

“We urge countries to decriminalize consensual same-sex relations, and to introduce laws that protect LGBT+ people from all forms of discrimination,” the British Embassy said.****
