The Ministry of Transportation invites the public to appreciate the services of sailors

Fajarasia.co – The Ministry of Transportation invites the public to make the commemoration of World Seafarers Day which falls every June 25 as a momentum to appreciate and respect the services of seafarers in supporting the world economy.

“Seafarers play an important role, namely to ensure that essential goods and logistics such as food, medicine, medical equipment and other necessities can reach the whole world,” said Acting Director General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Arif Toha. in a statement in Jakarta, Monday (27/6/2022).

This year’s World Seafarers Day carries the theme Your voyage – then and now, share your journey. This theme refers to the journey of seafarers who are part of global distribution so that seafarers have an important role as the backbone of a country’s economy.

Arif said the journey of the sailors while on duty was full of challenges and sometimes even had to risk their lives. The sailors also sacrificed a lot of time and energy to be together with their families.

“The struggle of the seafarers is getting tougher, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. All struggles are carried out to ensure the movement of people, the delivery of basic goods and commodities in the world runs smoothly, safely and safely to their destination,” he explained.

World Seafarers Day was first introduced in the Manila Amendments of June 2010 which adopted a major revision of the International Convention on Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers/STCW and related Codes, in which the Diplomatic Conference agreed that the contribution made by Seafarers to international trade should be recognized and celebrated every year with a “World Seafarers Day.”

June 25 which was chosen as World Seafarers Day was the day the Amendment was officially adopted. World Seafarers Day was first observed in 2011, when the International Maritime Organization or IMO used an online form of campaign through social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Youtube to rally support and ask everyone around the world to thank Seafarers .*****
