Revision of the Narcotics Law, Arsul: Regarding the Implementation of Rehabilitation for Users

Fajarasia.co – Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly, Arsul Sani, said that the revision of Law (UU) Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics must emphasize the implementation of rehabilitation for narcotics users.

Arsul considered, the current regulation is a polemic, because the number of narcotics prisoners exceeds the capacity of the Correctional Institution (Lapas).

“The revision of the Narcotics Law must establish or confirm legal politics related to rehabilitation for users,” said Arsul to reporters, Tuesday (28/6/2022).

However, this PPP politician revealed that the material on the Draft Law (RUU) on Narcotics submitted by the government did not sufficiently reveal the legal politics of relaxing criminalization related to narcotics abuse.

In addition, he is of the view that the material submitted by the government still opens room for the recurrence of the current problem of the Narcotics Law, namely the number of detainees that exceeds the capacity of the prison.

Therefore, Arsul said that the makers of the Narcotics Law had clearly prioritized users to undergo rehabilitation, as seen from Article 127 of the Narcotics Law.

“So the current revision of the law is rehabilitation. Because in the community, users think that users are serving a prison term because they don’t have the money to be rehabilitated,” he concluded.****
