NTB is optimistic about maintaining the status of Mount Rinjani as a World Geopark

Fajarasia.co – The West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government is optimistic that it will be able to maintain the status of Mount Rinjani as part of the Global Geopark Network (GGN) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“We are optimistic that the results of the Geopark Global Network team’s assessment will be good. Friends at Geopark Rinjani have worked and prepared well, God willing,” said Head of the NTB Tourism Office, Yusron Hadi, Tuesday (31/5/2022).

He said that if Mount Rinjani was able to maintain the status of a World Geopark, it would certainly have an impact on the image of Rinjani and NTB tourism in the eyes of the world.

“This will have an impact on Rinjani’s ‘branding’ as part of the Global Geopark Network and of course will give a positive image for the development of special interest tourism in NTB, so that many tourists will come to visit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UNESCO assessor field team is re-checking or revalidating the status of the Global Geopark Rinjani. The team of evaluators deployed by UNESCO came from Germany and Austria, namely Henning Zellmer and Oliver Gulas Woehri. In addition, there is also a team of evaluators from UNESCO Jakarta. “This evaluation and validation process takes place every four years. We hope that this activity will run smoothly and the status of the geopark will remain a ‘green card’ so that Rinjani remains a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark,” said Deputy Governor of NTB Sitti Rohmi Djalillah.

The Deputy Governor explained that once every four years the UNESCO assessor team evaluates and re-validates the status of Mount Rinjani, to remain a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark.

The UNESCO field team of assessors conducted field checks on Mount Rinjani from 29 May to 1 June 2022. There are several assessment indicators that must be met, such as geodiversity or geological diversity, biodiversity or cultural diversity, and cultural diversity.

The General Manager of Rinjani Geopark, Mohamad Farid Zaini said earlier in 2016 there were recommendations submitted by UNESCO to Rinjani. Among other things, partnership, disability, networking with linkedIn with all aspects of geoparks.

“We also focus on the four recommendations that have been submitted in 2016, namely partnership, disability, networking with LinkedIn with all aspects of geoparks,” he said.

The Mount Rinjani area, NTB, was designated as a new member of the world’s geopark in the UNESCO Executive Board meeting, Thursday (12/4) in 2018 in Paris, France.

Mount Rinjani is included in the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) area. This area covers four areas on the island of Lombok, starting from North Lombok Regency, West Lombok, Central Lombok, and East Lombok Regency.

One of the main charms of TNGR, is Lake Segara Anak which is located at an altitude of 2,010 meters above sea level. Segara Anak Lake is located in part of Mount Rinjani which reaches 3,726 meters above sea level.*****
