Kemendikbudristek hopes that UGM is a role model to maintain the quality of higher education

Fajarasia.co – The Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) Prof. Nizam hopes that Gadjah Mada University will consistently become a role model for higher education in Indonesia in maintaining the quality of higher education.

“We expect a lot from UGM. As the oldest university in Indonesia, UGM is expected to continue to maintain quality and be a role model for other universities,” said Nizam during a working visit at UGM Yogyakarta, Wednesday.

Nizam added that currently the world is undergoing a major transformation, including the world of higher education which will have an impact on the absorption of graduates in the world of work, business and industry.

The number of graduates produced, he said, is more than the availability of job opportunities.

“The available jobs each year range from 300-400 thousand. Meanwhile, there are 1.2 million university graduates every year,” he said.

According to Nizam, there are various factors that cause limited employment opportunities, one of which is because of technological disruption which has caused many jobs to be lost, but also opens up new job opportunities in the future.

This condition, according to him, becomes a challenge in the transformation of education.

He said that in the future higher education is expected not only to produce a workforce that depends on employment. However, the resulting graduates can be more independent and open up new job opportunities.

“This is a fact that we are currently facing, so let’s guard it together in the Merdeka Campus program. We hope that UGM can also participate in overseeing the process and its implementation so that the transformation is successful, producing graduates who are adaptive, creative, and metamorphose quickly to a changing world,” said Nizam.

UGM Chancellor Prof. dr. Ova Emilia expressed her hope that through this discussion forum, a joint solution could be found and solutions to the problems currently faced by UGM in maintaining the quality of its education can be found.

“For example, related to policies related to MBKM, human resources both lecturers and non-civil servant education staff, lecturer career paths, and others,” he said.****
