Government and DPR Expected to Make Climate Change Law

Fajarasia.co- Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, reminded the importance of disaster mitigation for areas of Indonesia that are prone to natural disasters. The National Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) Zenzi Suhadi appreciated the statement.

Zenzi suggested that the DPR and the government create a body responsible for cracking down on environmental law violations and making climate change laws.

This is necessary to mitigate disasters that occur due to human activities and occur throughout the earth, namely climate change. In addition, according to him, most of the disasters in Indonesia, smog, flash floods, are caused by environmental damage and exploitation of natural resources.

“If the DPR wants to reduce disaster risk in Indonesia, one condition is that we have a climate change law. Second, we must have a special commission for environmental and natural resource law enforcement,” he said in Jakarta, Monday (30/5/2022).

He revealed three geographical facts that make Indonesia have to deal with disaster risks, namely the ring of fire, an archipelagic country, and tropical forest areas. According to him, Indonesia will definitely be faced with volcanic and tectonic earthquakes.

Disasters can become non-disasters when they are properly mitigated. He gave an example of the tsunami red zone area which should not be developed, but it turns out that there are many developments that have a big impact on the community and have the potential to cause disaster risk.

“The victims who appear in the future are not only influenced by the certainty of an earthquake, but also by policy and regulatory errors,” he said.

Zenzi also mentioned disasters that may not occur in Indonesia, namely those related to hydrometeorological disasters, drought, or smoke. According to him, the disaster should not have happened in Indonesia.

He explained that most flash floods in Indonesia occur due to deforestation, logging. The DPR should review legislation products that could trigger a disaster.

Zenzi also mentioned climate change as one of the factors influencing hydrometeorological disasters. Indonesia as an archipelagic country has a big risk with climate change.

Previously, the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, reminded the importance of disaster mitigation for areas of Indonesia that are prone to natural disasters.

“This disaster mitigation is very important for the safety of all residents. Even though there are unavoidable disasters such as earthquakes, with maximum disaster mitigation, the impact can be reduced to a minimum,” said Puan.

Meanwhile, the coordinator of the climate change adaptation project of the Bintari Foundation, Semarang M.Arif said that a real example of the impact of climate change was the tidal flood that hit a number of cities on the north coast of Central Java.

Arif said that the Rob flood that occurred in the city of Semarang last weekend was an alarm for the sustainability of the lives of the people around him. This is an incident that has happened repeatedly and will have more impact in the future if disaster mitigation is not appropriate.

“The conditions yesterday were extraordinary. Infrastructure, which is prepared by the community. Floods have not occurred on a significant scale, for the last 10 years. The level of vigilance from the community or all parties is lacking.” call ,

The regional government, he said, had made various efforts in the infrastructure sector. Among them, building canals, raising embankments, and normalizing rivers, but what is missing is the community.

However, the community also does not want to move because it may be their only property. “What kind of social security can be prepared, what kind of social protection mechanism, from access to jobs, new places to live, to be prepared. And planned migration is a serious issue in some countries. You could say, be a long-term plan. For example, in the next 20 years. “said Arif. *****
