Fajarasia.co – MotoGP has confirmed that the Finnish Grand Prix will not take place this season due to homologation reasons, bringing the 2022 season to just 20 rounds.
Wednesday (25/5/2022), the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM), the MotoGP Team Association (IRTA) and Dorna Sports officially announced the change to the MotoGP World Championship calendar this season. The FIM and Dorna Sports will postpone the Finnish MotoGP until the 2023 season.
“The homologation work on the KymiRing, together with the risks posed by the ongoing geopolitical situation in the region, sadly cancels the Finnish Grand Prix in 2022,” a MotoGP statement read.
“Current circumstances have created delays and put the ongoing work on the new circuit at risk.
“Therefore, all parties have agreed that the track debut should be postponed until 2023, when MotoGP hopes to return to Finland for the first time in four decades.”
Previously, Finland was announced to be included in the 2019 Grand Prix motorcycle racing world championship calendar. However, the unfinished construction of the track, coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic, made the MotoGP race unable to be held at the KymiRing.
The 4.6-kilometer track has actually been tested by test riders from five manufacturers, namely Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM, Ducati and Aprilia, in August 2019.
In fact, before the cancellation of the 2022 Finnish MotoGP, there were plans to return to testing in mid-June next month. However, the conditions and circumstances did not seem possible.
The last time Finland hosted a motorcycle racing world championship was in 1982, the Imatra GP. Currently, the KymiRing Circuit holds a five-year hosting contract.****
