Fajarasia.co – China has urged the United States (US) to respond to Iran by resuming compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the stalled historic nuclear deal with Tehran.

“We emphasize diplomatic efforts to end the impasse,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as quoted by Anadolu Agency, Sunday (26/6/2022).

“The US side should sincerely acknowledge its responsibilities and respond positively to reasonable demands from the Iranian side,” he continued.

His comments came during a phone call from his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Thursday evening.

Amir-Abdollahian told Wang that the US was the main obstacle facing current negotiations on the landmark deal.

“The intimidating behavior of the United States is the main obstacle facing negotiations today,” Amir-Abdollahian said of continuing compliance with the JCPOA.

Earlier in the day, Amir-Abdollahian, during a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, urged Washington to be “realistic” in reaching an agreement to revive the landmark deal.

“The Iranian side will resolutely safeguard its national interests and is also firmly committed to resolving differences through negotiations to reach an agreement early,” Iran’s foreign minister told Wang.

Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian said, appreciates the “constructive role” China is playing in the Iranian nuclear issue.

Talks to revive the deal have stalled due to major disagreements between Tehran and Washington, including the removal of the list of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Assuring Iran’s strong support on issues related to each other’s core interests, Wang told Iran’s top diplomat that China “does not agree to non-constructive steps that lead to a spiraling escalation of the situation.”

“All sides must continue to uphold the logic of right and wrong and unceasingly promote reaching an agreement through diplomatic efforts,” Wang said, referring to the nuclear deal.

Beijing, he added, opposes “politicization of the affairs of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and supports the resolution of outstanding issues through dialogue and cooperation between the IAEA and the Iranian side.”****
